Runar Bäckströmin säätiön tarkoituksena on rohkaista ja edistää keksintötoimintaa, joka on hyödyksi suomalaisille yrityksille ja vahvistaa näin yritysten kansainvälistä kilpailukykyä.
Apuraha voidaan myöntää yksityisille ihmisille, työryhmille, yrityksille ja yhteisöille. Apurahan saajilta ei edellytetä muodollista pätevyyttä, kuten tiettyä oppiarvoa.
